Operating principles
These are not affirmations and they are not universal. They are the rules I run on, earned the expensive way, stated plainly enough to argue with.
On building
One-time money buys a month. Recurring money buys a decade. If the thing you built does not bill again, you did not build a business, you bought yourself a job.
A live version teaches you more in a week than a plan teaches you in a quarter. The market cannot respond to something it cannot see.
The best product with no distribution loses to a mediocre one with a channel. Decide how it reaches people before you decide what it is.
On work
Talent sets the ceiling. Reps set the floor. You spend almost your whole career living on the floor, so build the floor.
Starting is exciting and finishing is celebrated. Everything that determines the outcome happens in the boring stretch between them.
Instinct is a hypothesis. If you will not put a number on it, say out loud that you are guessing so the room can price the risk correctly.
On people
Being coached hard by someone who believes in you is a gift. Deliver the standard without the contempt and people will run through walls for you.
Every bad partnership I have been in was visible in the first month and I chose to explain it away. The tell is always how they behave when it costs them something.
Most deals die in vagueness. Name the price, the scope, and the date. Clarity is a kindness even when the answer is no.
On the long game
The asset is your health, your name, and your family. Every one of them compounds and every one of them can be spent in a quarter for money you will not remember.
Memory edits itself in your favor. Record the decision and the reasoning at the moment you make it, not after you find out how it turned out.
Most of what a person learns dies with them. The only real inheritance is judgment, and judgment has to be handed over on purpose.
The caveat
Every one of these is a compression of something that took years and cost real money. The compressed version is useless without the story underneath it, which is why the story exists.
